Our story

The building,
not the ballot.

On The Hill is a Washington, D.C. cap label built on the working language of Capitol Hill. Every design starts with a phrase that gets said a hundred times a week inside the House and Senate office buildings and almost never outside them.

We take the vocabulary of the place, give it the craft of a boutique cap label, and hand it back to the people who actually live it. The test is simple. Would a 27 year old legislative correspondent get the joke in under a second, and would their parents need it explained?

Who it is for

Legislative assistants, correspondents, press secretaries, schedulers, committee staff, fellows. Blue line to Capitol South. Kickball on the Mall in summer, Dewey in August, a couch in November, boxes in December.

The one rule

Nonpartisan, by design. No candidates, no parties, no slogans that pick a side. If a design only works for half the room, it does not work. The building belongs to everyone who works in it.

What we are not

A campaign store, a souvenir stand, or a novelty tee company. We are a cap label first. The names are free, ownable, and in endless supply. Markup, Quorum Call, Cloture, Dear Colleague. Each one is a future drop.

The glossary

On The HillWhere staffers say they work. Nobody says “at Congress.”
Yeas and NaysA recorded vote. The bells ring and everyone runs. The bells rang. You have fifteen minutes.
Lame DuckThe session between the election and the new Congress. Boxes in the hallway. Beer on the stoop.
August RecessThe district work period. The month the city exhales. Out of office until after Labor Day. For urgent matters, contact the district office.
The SwampThe nickname, the humidity, and the people who love to hate it. Ninety-four degrees, ninety percent humidity, one mile to walk in a suit.

How the pre-order works

Four caps, first run. Ships in 6 to 8 weeks.

You order

Pick a cap, or any 3 for $99, mixed however you like. Checkout runs on Shopify and you pay when you order. Every cap is one size, with an adjustable back.

Two

We make the run

The first run is 50 of each cap, made for the people who ordered it. When a cap reaches zero it is sold out, and the next run gets a new notice.

Three

It ships

Ships in 6 to 8 weeks, from Dallas, TX, with a tracking email when it leaves. Shipping is free on orders of $70 or more, or pick up free at 500 North Capitol St NW, #210, Washington, DC 20001. Questions go to hello@onthehill.shop.

How the caps are made

Built to a written spec.

Cotton chino twill, garment-washed to a lived-in hand. Two-thread flat embroidery at 3.25 inches wide, with 3D puff only where a script or a block word calls for height. Woven patches sewn on, never heat-pressed. Colors matched to physical lab dips, never to a screen.

How the pictures are taken

Flash on. Every time.

A compact point-and-shoot, flash fired straight at the subject, at dusk or at night. Marble hallways, Metro escalators, hearing rooms in recess. If it looks like it was shot for a lookbook, it does not go in the lookbook.
